quest

Philippine cinemas better screen this film or I will sue!

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is a comedy about two people thrust together for one hilarious, sleepless night of adventure in a world of mix tapes, late-night living, and, live, loud music. Nick (Michael Cera) frequents New York’s indie rock scene nursing a broken heart and a vague ability to play the bass. Norah (Kat Dennings) is questioning pretty much all of her assumptions about the world. Though they have nothing in common except for their taste in music, their chance encounter leads to an all-night quest to find a legendary band’s secret show and ends up becoming the first date in a romance that could change both their lives.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 71 percent rating, which means it’s not crappy at all.

Anyone, let’s, okay, if?

catching up

September 7, 2008 at 11:42 pm (books, life) (, , )

This week I bought four books: three from BookSale, and one from Fully Booked.

yes i caved in to the 'twilight' fad. sue me.

yes i caved in to the 'twilight' fad. sue me.

The books from BookSale, I got for only P40 each yey:

1. Dreamside by English speculative fiction writer Graham Joyce, about two couples exploring “lucid dreaming”–the art/science of being able to control your own dreams–and how their experiments spun out of control. It’s good, and kind of spooky; I finished it in a day.

2. ‘80 by Whit Johnston, about New York in 1980 told through the eyes of an undiscovered yet talented photographer. So far I’ve only read about 30 percent of the book, but I’m already liking the pop culture references (the Yippies’ Abbie Hoffman, Conde Nast, etc) inserted within the fictional photographer’s insightful diary entries.

3. Emily’s Reasons Why Not by Carrie Gerlach, about a 20-something looking for *drumroll please* love. I’ve yet to start reading it.

And then from Fully Booked I got Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Yes, I joined the bandwagon. It actually wasn’t so hard, not like how I felt when I decided to buy skinny jeans, haha. If I end up liking it, I’ll buy the rest of the books in the series next week. I’m pretty sure I will though, because what’s not to love about a vampire love story? Hihi.

I’m trying to like My Morning Jacket, but I find them not nearly as likeable as New York-based Vampire Weekend which was dubbed The New Great Discovery, or something to that effect. Actually I wasn’t too crazy about Vampire Weekend’s songs either, save for “Oxford Comma.” They sound kind of folksy, and while that’s not a bad thing, I guess it’s just not my cup of tea.

Anyway, it’s just that I’ve been seeing My Morning Jacket’s name everywhere, and I want to know what it’s all about. I guess I have to watch Elizabethtown in full to appreciate them–they were the band featured as Ruckus. I never finish Elizabethtown when it’s being shown on cable, even though I adore Cameron Crowe (hello, Almost Famous), mostly because for some reason I can’t stand Orlando Bloom and never really liked Kirsten Dunst.

See, I’ve been constantly trying to find a new band to like while The Strokes have yet to release their fourth album. So far the search is futile–no band’s given me that magical feeling you get when you know from the first track that you’re going to love their music. That’s the way I felt when I first listened to Nirvana years ago. And Pearl Jam, and the Smashing Pumpkins, and The Who, and more recently, the White Stripes, Muse, and The Strokes. Ah, the good old days.

So right now I’m sticking to new stuff from the old and familiar–R.E.M.’s Accelerate, The Raconteurs’ Consolers of the Lonely. Not bad, but still.

Anyway, I gotta fly. Will see The Dark Knight with RJ in a few hours.

nothing a little italian food can’t solve

July 24, 2008 at 3:31 pm (life) (, , , )

The thing about me is that I’m spontaneous, so on Tuesday night I did something I prolly shouldn’t have done (not THAT big, but it hit me under these circumstances–yes I too can be a drama queen), and felt all sick and sad the next morning.

Thank God for friends who are spontaneous as well. Lawrence came to the rescue and we had dinner on Wednesday night at Pizza Hut Bistro in Gateway so he can help me rationalize my thoughts/emotions.

What can I say.  We talked for a long time–he concluded that I am, indeed, in that phase, and he is amused. Even the (cute) waiter was fascinated with my animated story-telling. He left a note on the receipt, which cracked us up.

Afterwards we went to Starbucks, where Eula Valdez (!) lined up at the women’s CR. During our walk to the taxis at around 10:30 p.m. we passed by some pro basketball players; a game just ended at the Araneta Coliseum, I think. Actually, Lawrence said that. I know zilch about the PBA now.

Update: The Italian food worked, but to further bolster the cheering-up program I got all dreamy/pretentious and bought the Style Issue of The New Yorker.  I couldn’t put it down.  Harmless escapism at its finest.
